Abstract
Dans cet article, j’étudie l’impact des étudiants étrangers à l’Université de Montréal sur les pratiques syndicales, institutionnelles et d’inclusion des étudiants québécois les plus engagés – c’est-à-dire ceux qui s’impliquent dans l’Association générale des étudiants de l’Université de Montréal ou dans le journal étudiant leQuartier latin. Je démontre que face aux étudiants étrangers, l’AGEUM a d’abord été déstabilisée et portée à recourir à une approche paternaliste pour écarter ceux qui contestaient son statut de porte-parole des étudiants et de la jeunesse. J’explore ensuite les stratégies des étudiants étrangers pour faire valoir leurs points de vue et, au sein de leur propre association (Cosmopolis), s’approprier la formation discursive de l’AGEUM et participer à la politique étudiante. Bricolé avec les moyens du bord et tiraillé par les nombreuses nationalités qui la composent, Cosmopolis s’érigera, en quelques années à peine, en interlocuteur de l’AGEUM et en caisse de résonnance, à Montréal, pour des enjeux qui marqueront les années 1960-1970 comme l’antiracisme, la décolonisation, l’immigration, l’intégration culturelle et la place du Québec dans la francophonie.
