Abstract
Si nous donnons crédit à l’hypothèse selon laquelle la haine de l’autre est toujours, d’une manière ou d’une autre, la haine de soi, si l’on accepte l’idée que la détestation souveraine d’autrui est une forme de mépris de soi, alors il y a urgence à placer au coeur du projet éducatif de l’école la question de l’estime de soi. Nous avons organisé ce texte en trois sections. Dans la première section, nous explicitons la notion d’estime de soi, nous le faisons avec les mots de Ricoeur. Dans la seconde section, nous déclinons les lignes de force d’une éthique enseignante centrée sur l’estime de soi (de l’élève) et montrons comment elle noue trois grandes vertus (la justice, la sollicitude et le tact). Dans la troisième et dernière section, nous montrons que l’exemplarité, la nécessaire exemplarité professorale, peut être pensée comme une exemplarité ordinaire. Heureux paradoxe, l’éthique pour temps difficiles n’est pas une éthique surérogatoire, elle ne requiert ni la sainteté, ni l’héroïsme.
