Abstract
Many methods of voice and actor training prioritize freedom of breath, including movement of the lower abdomen during respiration, as a means of achieving not only efficient vocal support, but also emotional and imaginative access. The neurobiological basis for this phenomenon is explored in some detail, with particular attention paid to the work of Antonio Damasio as well as contemporary research on the enteric nervous system or “gut brain.” This is discussed in terms of its application to actor training methodology and specifically in relationship to the “swamp exploration” taught by celebrated Canadian vocal pedagogue David Smukler. The use of image, ideokinesis, and metaphor in voice and actor training is discussed with emphasis on the value of providing a re-framing of the actor’s self-perception to include their “guts” as the visceral source of their thoughts, images, emotions, and actions. The scientific research described herein and Smukler’s swamp exploration support and elucidate that shift of orientation.
