AbstrakDatangnya Ajaran Islam ke daerah Cirebon dibawa oleh para ulama yangberpusat di daerah Muara Jati. Raden Walang sungsang yang diperintahkan olehSyekh Dathul Kafhi untuk membuka lahan di sekitar Lemah Wungkuk sekarangdikenal sebagai daerah Tegal Alang-alang, untuk menyebarkan Ajaran Islam kedaerah selatan Cirebon, pada saat itu masih termasuk ke dalam kekuasan GaluhPajajaran. Penamaan Tegal Alang-Alang tidak terlepas dari kondisi tempat padasaat itu, yang banyak ditumbuhi sejenis rumput alang-alang. Perkembangan agamaIslam sangat pesat setelah Syekh Syarif Hidayatullah memegang tampuk kekuasandi Kerajaan Cirebon. Perkembangan ini bukan hanya kekuasaan secara politik,tetapi juga secara sosial budaya. Untuk menunjang ekspansi kekuasaan perlu adanyadaerah-daerah yang dikuasai. Pembukaan lahan untuk pemukiman penduduk perluadanya nama tempat untuk daerah tersebut. Penamaan suatu daerah tidak terlepas darisejarah budaya daerah tersebut. Asal-usul nama tempat di Kabupaten Cirebon tidakterlepas dari peran Pangeran Cakrabuana dan Syekh Syarif Hidayatullah. Panamaansatu tempat banyak yang berasal dari petatah petitih yang diucapkan oleh PangeranCakrabuana dan Syekh Syarif Hidayatulllah. Nama-nama tempat tersebut bisa terjadihasil pekerjaan orang, perasaan orang, keadaan alam, sejenis nama pohon atau punnama-nama benda yang ada pada saat daerah tersebut ditemukan.AbstractWhen Syekh Syarif Hidayatullah came into throne the spread of Islam inCirebon was developing very rapidly, either politically or socio-culturally. Politically,the sultanate expanded its power to other regions and conquered them, resulting theneed to open many lands for habitation. The new conquered lands needed new namesand the names which were applied to them were closely related to the cultural historyof the lands themselves. It was Pangeran (Prince) Cakrabuana and Syekh SyarifHidayatullah who named the lands, based on their sayings as well as topograhic ormorphological condition of each lands.
