Abstract
John A. Macdonald est aujourd’hui une figure politique contestée. Des groupes voudraient que son nom soit effacé des bâtiments publics et des écoles ou encore que ses statues soient déboulonnées. Or, nous verrons dans cet article que, dans le passé, John A. Macdonald était vu comme un symbole positif et un exemple de la création réussie du Canada. C’est ce que nous montrerons à partir de l’examen des débats parlementaires qui ont mené, en 2001-2002, à l’institution d’une journée en l’honneur de John A. Macdonald et une autre en l’honneur de Wilfrid Laurier.
