Abstract
Den Hintergrund für diesen Beitrag bildet die Frage, wie Jugendliche unter den gegenwärtigen Bedingungen der Globalisierung und Konsumkultur ihre Identität konstituieren. In einer Studie, die als interkultureller Vergleich angelegt war, haben wir dazu Jugendliche in drei Kontinenten interviewt: in Nordamerika (Edmonton, Kanada), Europa (Klagenfurt, Österreich) und Afrika (Dar-es-Salaam, Tansania). Hier konzentrieren wir uns auf unsere Interviews in Tansania, die wir im Dezember 1994, sechs bis sieben Monate, nachdem dort das Fernsehen eingeführt wurde, durchgeführt haben. Somit ergab sich für uns die historische Situation, in den Gesprächen etwas darüber zu erfahren, wie diese Konfrontation mit anderen Lebensformen und kulturellen Praktiken aufgenommen wird. Welche Rolle spielt der Konsum von Fernsehsendungen und Videos für die Identität der Jugendlichen in Dar-es-Salaam?
