La parution de L'Histoire de la littérature québécoise -que signent aux Éditions du Boréal Michel Biron, François Dumont et Élisabeth Nardout-Lafarge, avec la collaboration de Martine-Emmanuelle Lapointeconstitue un véritable événement.Il y a en effet plus de quarante ans qu'une histoire aussi ambitieuse, axée principalement sur les œuvres, n'avait été publiée, la dernière étant celle que Pierre de Grandpré avait fait pa raître dans les années 1967-1969.Mais plus important encore, ce nouveau grand récit de la littérature du Québec, qui va des écrits de la Nouvelle-France aux œuvres et problématiques d'aujourd'hui, se caractérise par une intelligence du propos et une qualité d'écriture peu communes.À côté de l'érudition manifeste dont témoigne cette synthèse, il faut d'abord, je crois, souligner le plaisir que l'on éprouve à sa lecture.Les trois auteurs ont réussi le pari de lier leurs savoirs et leur style de telle façon qu'aucune rupture de ton n'est perceptible.Le fait qu'ils viennent d'horizons différents a certainement contribué à la réussite et à la richesse de l'entreprise : Michel Biron est titulaire de la chaire de recherche en littérature québécoise et en littératures francophones à l'Université McGill, François Dumont enseigne la poésie et l'essai à l'Université Laval et Élisabeth Nardout-Lafarge s'intéresse particulièrement à l'Université de Montréal au roman français et québécois du XX e siècle.Tous trois avaient déjà publié des ouvrages marquants : Biron, L'absence du maître (Presses de l'Université de Montréal 2000), Dumont, La poésie québé coise (Boréal 1999), Nardout-Lafarge, Réjean Ducharme.Une poétique du dé-
