Abstract
Summary: In his novel Ostende (1995), Francois Gravel, one of the best-known Quebecois writers for young adults, focuses on two of the most eventful and stormy decades of twentieth-century Quebec. In his remembrance of things past, the author explores fundamental themes: death, revolt and sexuality. The ideals of young Quebeckers who wanted to change the world are revisited by an ageing narrator, who knows how to handle irony. Can youth and fervour destroyed by fleeting time be rekindled by memory and writing? Resume: Dans Ostende (1995), Francois Gravel, un des ecrivains pour la jeunesse les plus connus, raconte deux decennies de vie quebecoise, peut-etre parmi les plus mouvementees du siecle. Dans cette recherche d'un temps perdu, il explore les themes de la mort, de la revolte et de la sexualite. Les ideaux de ces jeunes Quebecois qui ont voulu revolutionner le monde sont reexamines par un narrateur vieillisant, qui sait manier l'ironie. Cette jeunesse et cette ferveur detruites par le temps qui fuit peuvent-elles revivre par la memoire et l'ecriture?
