L’auteure explore les différentes manières d’envisager l’enseignement ménager au coeur du xx e siècle québécois, en particulier la tension entre un enseignement professionnel et un enseignement ayant pour objet la formation de bonnes mères et épouses canadiennes-françaises. Un bref portrait de l’enseignement ménager et de la formation de celles qui y travaillent au Québec est d’abord présenté, suivi d’une analyse des relations difficiles entre le Département de l’instruction publique et l’École ménagère provinciale, relations cristallisées par l’enjeu de la formation ménagère professionnelle : l’auteure veut ainsi illustrer les diverses façons de considérer l’éducation et le travail féminin qui s’entrechoquent dans les années d’après-guerre.
