Peering into DNA to save species and ecosystems T he sea was the color of old silver, its surface as smooth as a waveworn shell.Just after dawn on a cool August day, a group of biologists and naturalists milled around on a dock in remote Klemtu, British Columbia (BC), 530 kilometers due north of Vancouver.The group, including this writer, awaited the motor vessel KX Spirit.Spirit would soon ferry us to a remote island in search of a rare "spirit bear.
