If there is one institution whose most serious undertaking is shaping the “face of the future,” it is the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Working out of MIT’s AI Lab at the turn of this century, Cynthia Breazeal created Kismet, a robotic head designed to be “sociable,” capable of interacting with humans in an embodied, affective manner. Following Bruno Latour’s recent notion of “Dingpolitik” and Adrian Mackenzie’s formulation of the concept of transduction, this article examines Kismet, not simply as an object of high-technology, but instead as a highly socialized, politically alive thing carrying a variety of—perhaps uncanny—cultural meanings for the face(s) of a future between humans and nonhumans.
