Les traits constituent l’unité de mesure de la personnalité la plus employée en recherche. Puisque plusieurs études longitudinales ont démontré que les traits de personnalité sont reliés à l’apparition et l’évolution de différents problèmes d’adaptation chez les enfants, les adolescents et les adultes, les questionnaires de traits de personnalité sont aussi de plus en plus utilisés pour l’évaluation clinique dans différents contextes d’intervention. Il est donc important pour les professionnels de l’intervention psychosociale de bien comprendre l’approche des traits de personnalité. Le trait de personnalité demeure pourtant un concept mal compris. Cet article tente de clarifier et de définir rigoureusement ce concept en expliquant les principaux postulats de l’approche des traits de personnalité. La présentation de ces postulats permet de souligner les principales controverses à propos de l’existence, la validité et l’utilité pratique des traits de personnalité. Bien qu’il reste des problèmes conceptuels et méthodologiques à résoudre, les recherches empiriques disponibles démontrent que les traits ont atteint un statut scientifique satisfaisant et qu’ils constituent des unités de mesure fondamentales de la personnalité humaine utiles autant pour la recherche que la pratique clinique.
