Abstract

Amidst continuous claims about racialized profiling in the city, recent literature suggests that informationization of the body is occurring as a result of the union between identification, verification and closed circuit television (CCTV) monitoring systems. In these systems, biometric recognition measures (e.g., facial or retinal topography) and computerized administrative records generate suspicion profiles and risk categories. While advanced technological systems tend toward the creation of “disembodied states,” where bodies are represented as binary codes in centralized databases, the politics of “people watching people” are still grounded in racialized procedures. The objective of this paper is to comprehend how racialized profiling in the city is reconstituted through local authorities’ reliance on urban camera surveillance and risk management schemes.
