Abstract
Do the French people of foreign descent display a lesser sense of belonging to France or do they have a specific way of being French? Two surveys conducted in 2000 and 2003 show that both answers are negative. Distancing oneself from national identity and values is a cohort characteristic particularly strong among all French born after 1965, as proved for instance, by the way they relate to national symbols.In three-quarter of a century, French belonging has turned from explicit to implicit. Finally, from the 1970’s it turned out to be uncertain, becoming less clear for them and becoming for some of them a challenge lacking of any clear content. Throughout decades, it appears that the French of foreign descent are above all French, even if they interpret in their own manner the general patterns of their age cohort, even if they accentuate some of its characteristics.
