Abstract
The effects of force balancing on dynamic instability of high-speed flexible four-bar mechanisms are investigated in this paper. Introduction of counterweights to an unbalanced mechanism for the purpose of balancing increases the magnitudes of dynamic forces in individual links, reduces the instantaneous structural natural frequencies of the mechanisms, and changes unstable ranges of operational speeds. Numerical results reveal that the moments of inertia of the counterweights mounted on the input and output pivots have a larger impact on the principal regions of dynamic instability than do the masses of the counterweights.
