Même parmi les milieux canadiens les plus cléricaux, les études leplaysiennes ont joui d’une certaine audience et d’une certaine popularité au tournant du xxe siècle. Puis, au fur et à mesure où l’on avance dans le siècle, cette forme de sociologie s’est effacée du paysage intellectuel canadien français. Alors que la doctrine de Le Play pouvait séduire un conservateur ou un nationaliste canadien français, les désaccords avec ses disciples dissidents de l’École de la science sociale, Edmond Demolins et Henri de Tourville, furent beaucoup plus nombreux. C’est donc dans un déplacement des fondements épistémo-politiques de la pratique sociologique, et non seulement dans des circonstances périphériques à la science sociale elle-même, qu’il faut trouver les motifs d’un désintérêt collectif qui entraina, à terme, la marginalisation à peu près complète de l’œuvre de Le Play au Canada français de l’entre-deux-guerres.
