Abstract
The conversion of an existing three-branch parallel-manipulator-based analog-sensed joystick to digital encoding is described 1 . The conversion to digital encoding involved modifying the links to accept the new encoders and interfacing the encoders to a PC via quadrature-encoder counter cards. The new system has several advantages. Besides the increase in the accuracy of the joystick, there is also improvement in calibration. This paper will outline the kinematics of the device, describe the original analog-sensing method, discuss the design of the new digital joystick and present its specifications. Results of positional accuracy comparisons will also be presented.
