Abstract

Gear cutting is the only technology currently available which provides both the accuracy and the ability to process the hard materials required by modern exacting mechanisms. Simultaneously, Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMM) are one of the most reliable and accurate metrological tools. In order to integrate these two machines in gear manufacturing industry, an analytical methodology is developed for Numerical Control (NC) data generation to produce and measure gears on machine tools and coordinate measuring machines without rotary table. Homogeneous transformation matrices are used for expressing the ability function matrices of the employed machines and in the generation of the desired tool location matrices. NC data equations are determined by equating the corresponding elements of the machine’s ability function matrices to the desired tool location matrices. To verify the validity of this methodology, a designed gear meshed with rack was machined and then its surfaces were measured by a CMM equipped with a touch-trigger probe. This methodology is a general one and is applicable to various spatial gears. It combines the activities of design, manufacturing, and measurement, thus making the production process more flexible, automatic, and controllable.
