Abstract
Le film de John Grierson Drifters et le mouvement documentaire britannique seront examinés en termes de modernité, de modernisme et d'une conception typiquement britannique du cinéma moderniste partagée par les cinéphiles anglais. Les études sur le documentaire ont rarement discuté du réseau parallèle de la cinéphilie britannique, qui fut pourtant crucial pour la réception critique des oeuvres, offrant un espace où le documentaire pouvait être vu et apprécié entant quart. Grierson a aussi fait la promotion du mouvement documentaire dans plusieurs écrits qui ressemblaient à d'autres discours « alternatifs » sur Se cinéma. Un modernisme typiquement britannique est évident dans la trope industrielle et l'esthétique machiniste de Drifters, Mais on y perçoit aussi la problématique de la construction de la masculinité prolétaire.
