Abstract
Une approche structurelle et théologique de la controverse d’Ézéchiel 18 démontre que ce texte vise moins à établir avec exactitude la doctrine de la rétribution individuelle qu’à débloquer une impasse et à inviter à une conversion. Les exilés, auxquels Dieu s’adresse, se prétendent victimes des fautes de leurs « pères ». Cela les enferme dans le fatalisme et les empêche de voir leur propre culpabilité. Dieu affirme que les gens de la génération actuelle ne paient pas pour les révoltes des précédentes, mais à cause de leurs agissements incorrects. La reconnaissance de leur responsabilité peut les amener à retourner à Dieu par un changement radical (« en se faisant un coeur neuf et un esprit neuf ») et leur ouvre un avenir d’espoir et de vie.
