Abstract
L’oeuvre vidéographique de Richard Fung, Dirty Laundry, souligne la pertinence des questions de race et de sexualité dans le discours historique entourant la construction du chemin de fer Canadien Pacifique. L’espace liminal que repré - sente le voyage en train s’entrecroise aux histoires contestées des Chinois célibataires qui ont travaillé aux sections les plus dangereuses du chemin de fer. Le titre fait référence à la fois au cliché de la buanderie chinoise et à la notion que plusieurs aspects de l’histoire sino-canadienne sont considérés comme étant trop honteux pour être commémorés—on ne lave pas son « linge sale » en public. L’oeuvre de Fung pose la problématique de ces histoires de « perversion » et déstabilise les fondements sur lesquels reposent les notions exclusives de subjectivité raciale et d’histoire nationale.
