Abstract

Operational analysis of all available real time in situ snow depth observations from SYNOPS, METARS (meteorological aviation reports) and SAs (special aviation reports) on the World Meteorological Organization information system. The analysis is updated every 6 hours using the method of optimum interpolation with an initial guess field provided by a simple snow accumulation and melt model using analyzed temperatures and forecast (6 hour) precipitation from the CMC global forecast model GEM. The method is described in Brasnett (1999). Data through 2008 are archived locally in the Polar Data Catalogue. Annual updates to the dataset are provided to the NSIDC at http://nsidc.org/data/nsidc-0447.html
