Abstract
Le festival de films et de vidéos LGBT Inside Out a vu le jour au début des années 1990, moment qui ponctue la fin d’une décennie marquée par l’épidémie du SIDA et par la discrimination persistante de la part des institutions. Collectif transgressif, solidement ancrée dans une base bénévole, le festival s’est ensuite développé comme un organisme sans but lucratif avec ses employés rémunérés et des commanditaires corporatifs majeurs. Devant le marché saturé des festivals internationaux de film, Inside Out a peiné pour conserver un équilibre entre le désir de contribuer à l’image publique de la communauté gay tout en maintenant une niche distincte favorisant l’émergence de représentations toujours renouvelées de la queerness. En montrant comment Inside Out en est venu à jouer un rôle important dans la façon dont s’est définie l’identité queer à Toronto, cet essai fait la chronique des moments par lesquels le festival est passé d’un lieu de célébration d’une communauté à une industrie, pour enfin effectuer un retour à ses racines communautaires.
