0861 Teen Sleep Patterns and Enjoyment in Sports

Abstract
Lack of sleep has been associated with a decrease of positive emotions and an increase of negative emotions. During teenage years, sleep is characterized by a delay in sleep-wake patterns that can lead to a sleep debt and daytime sleepiness. This study aims to explore the possible associations between teens’ enjoyment during physical activities and their sleep patterns. To date, fifteen high school students (13 to 14 years old) were recruited to be part of a longitudinal study of their sleep patterns and their sport and academic performances. Ten of those students are enrolled in Sports-Studies programs that involve a competitive practice of a sport for at least 15h every week. The other five students are attending a regular school program. Each student completed the Physical Activity Enjoyment Scale (PAES), sleep diaries and wore an actigraph for 8 days at the beginning of the school year. Bedtimes and wake-up times during school nights and on weekend nights were extracted from the actigraphy as well as social jetlag. An exploratory analysis was performed in order to verify the associations between the PAES and sleep patterns using Pearson’s correlations. Results showed that the score of the PAES is negatively correlated with social jetlag (r=-.60; p=.019) and wake-up times during weekend nights (r=-.57; p=.027). Social jetlag is also positively correlated with bedtimes (r=.62; p=.01) and wake-up times (r=.80; p=<.001) on weekend nights. No correlations were found between the PAES and other sleep variables. These preliminary results suggest that the stability of a teen’s sleep schedule between school nights and weekend nights is associated with more enjoyment in physical activities and sports. More specifically, waking-up earlier on weekends, as teens usually do on school nights, is associated with more enjoyment in physical activities and sports. This could have important implications when addressing sedentary and sport motivation problems in adolescents. These results will need to be confirmed with larger sample. -
