Abstract

The design of a robot for application in space or on the surface of another planet poses a large number of difficulties unique to extraterrestrial environments. This paper discusses these issues; specifically, the effects of vacuum, low and microgravity, radiation, launch vibration and the remoteness of application, as relevant to space robotic systems. An overview of considerations in actuator design, lubrication and wear control in joints, manoeuvring, control and computation hardware, thermal control, sensors and power systems is provided.
