Abstract
Célèbre pour sa contribution à la redécouverte de la peinture médiévale autant que pour ses travaux sur la peinture française du xviie siècle, Charles Sterling (1901-1991) est également considéré par la critique comme l’un des plus grands exhibition makers du xxe siècle et son nom est, aujourd’hui encore, étroitement associé à certaines des plus éminentes manifestations organisées par les musées nationaux entre les années 1930 et 1960. En retraçant le fil de son parcours intellectuel à travers ces événements, cet article se propose de réévaluer la contribution de Charles Sterling à la pratique de l’exposition temporaire au xxe siècle et de déterminer en quoi la façon dont il s’est illustré dans cet exercice en fait tout à la fois un témoin et un acteur privilégié de la transformation de l’objet qui accompagne ces événements, le catalogue d’exposition, en véritable instrument de mise en récit de l’histoire de l’art et, plus encore, en outil scientifique à part entière.
