Abstract
Le fait francophone se vit au quotidien en Alberta, et c’est cette dimension que nous avons choisi d’explorer : en nous appuyant sur les travaux sociologiques bien connus du professeur Robert Stebbins – The Franco-Calgarians (1994) et The French Enigma (2000) –, nous nous intéresserons au personnage de Gérard Mousseron qui habite à Calgary depuis 40 ans. Entre fiction et Histoire, entre biographie et littérature, et à l’aide de données personnelles, professionnelles et culturelles, nous identifierons son engagement linguistique et ses rapports avec la communauté symbolique qu’est la francophonie calgaréenne. Nous tenterons ainsi de cerner les composantes identitaires de ce personnage. Dans The Franco-Calgarians, Robert Stebbins met de l’avant que la sphère des loisirs joue un rôle essentiel dans la configuration identitaire des Franco-Calgaréens, rôle qu’il perçoit encore plus important que les domaines traditionnels du milieu familial ou de l’éducation. Bien des choses ont changé depuis la publication de cet ouvrage en 1994, et nous verrons comment les données de l’enquête menée par Stebbins s’appliquent au cas de Gérard Mousseron. Nous tenterons d’illustrer la valeur de cette expérience de 40 années de francophonie à Calgary, à la fois dans le contexte de l’existence de ce personnage et de celui de sa communauté, et essaierons d’entrevoir ce que cette expérience peut représenter à court, moyen et long termes.
 
 Abstract 
 
 “Francophonie” in Alberta is not limited to its history: it is lived and experienced on a daily basis, and it is that aspect we wish to address in this article. Based both on Robert Stebbins’ sociological research published in The Franco-Calgarians (1994) and The French Enigma (2000), and on the life of Gérard Mousseron who has been a Calgary resident for 40 years, this article rides the thin line between fiction and History, biography and literature. Using personal, professional and cultural data, we identify Mousseron’s linguistic involvement and his relationships with the symbolic francophone community in Calgary. In The Franco-Calgarians, Stebbins stresses the centrality of leisure in the identity of Franco-Calgarians, a domain he perceives as more important than the traditional spheres of family or education. While we recognize that many things have changed in the francophone community since Stebbins’s study in 1994, we will see how his approach can still be useful in the case of Gérard Mousseron. We illustrate the value of his 40 years in Calgary in terms of both his personal existence and that of his community, and we identify what it can represent in the short, medium and long-term range.
