Abstract
Cet essai analyse la façon dont certaines conditions spécifiques à Ottawa, entre 1894 et 1896, combinés à la configuration particulière du divertissement commercial, de l’électrification et de l’expansion urbaine, ont coloré la réception du cinéma par ses citoyens. Retraçant l’arrivée du Kinétoscope Edison, la présentation de spectacles illuminés au carnaval d’hiver de 1895, le rôle de l’automobile et des entreprises d’expansion urbaine dans la diffusion des vues animées, l’examen met en lumière le contexte de développement du cinéma par lequel des technologies et des formes de divertissement répandues partout dans le monde se sont transformées au contact d’influences locales. Cet essai considère l’analyse de la position « intermédiale » du cinéma comme une nouvelle façon de conceptualiser tant la culture cinématographique canadienne que les stratégies impliquées dans l’interprétation de son histoire.
