Cet article aborde la question de la conception métisse de l’âme du défunt à travers l’étude des messes, veillées funèbres et processions en milieu urbain de la région de Cusco (Pérou). Il se focalise sur l’hymne Puriq wayra, dont le titre quechua signifie « Vent errant » et qui est une pièce incontournable du répertoire pour les morts. Comme son titre l’indique, Puriq wayra renvoie au caractère baladeur de l’esprit après la mort. Les paroles de cet hymne évoquent l’animu, une conception importante pour penser la force vitale qui anime les personnes. Cette analyse est basée sur des observations de terrain réalisées depuis 1981, essentiellement dans la ville de Cusco. Elle est combinée avec une perspective réflexive et anthropologique des hommages musicaux réalisés dans la cathédrale de Cusco, mais également dans le cimetière de la Almudena, un quartier populaire et métisse de cette ville.
