Il volume indaga il tema delle cause non economiche del commercio tra stati, approfondendo il ruolo della democrazia, delle alleanze militari e degli accordi preferenziali a base regionale. L'applicazione di un modello gravitazionale ad un ampio campione di stati tra il 1960 ed il 2000, unitamente all'approfondimento sui casi dei rapporti tra India e Pakistan e, rispettivamente, Canada e Stati Uniti, segnala da un lato il persistente effetto depressivo del conflitto sugli scambi, dall'altro il ruolo fondamentale della condivisione democratica. L'indagine sul processo di regionalizzazione in sud Asia tramite il SAFTA, infine, apre la strada ad una riflessione sul ruolo della diplomazia commerciale nei conflitti tra stati.
