La promotion de la justice sociale et la dénonciation de l’injustice sociale occupent une place importante dans les écrits du prophète Amos, que l’on qualifie fréquemment de « prophète de la justice sociale ». Amos ne se limite pas à dénoncer l’injustice sociale dans le royaume d’Israël : il s’en prend également à ses voisins. Mais sur quelles bases Amos s’appuie-t-il pour dénoncer les nations voisines et considérer qu’elles sont soumises au jugement du Dieu d’Israël ? Dans cet article, nous verrons que le prophète s’inspire de la rhétorique impériale assyrienne. En effet, le Dieu d’Amos se comporte comme un dieu impérial, qui n’hésite pas à punir les peuples vassaux qui ne respectent pas leurs engagements envers l’empire. La rhétorique d’Amos est toutefois originale : YHWH menace les nations voisines d’Israël parce qu’elles n’ont pas fait appliquer les règles de base de la justice sociale, où les plus vulnérables devraient être protégés.
