Cette lecture démarcative du premier chapitre de L’Argent interroge la longue mise en train d’un roman au sujet ingrat. L’amateur de documents et de plans préétablis qu’est Zola retravaille ses croquis au profit d’un Saccard occupant successivement plusieurs postes d’observation. Le couple dedans/dehors organise alors un récit dans lequel le personnage principal cherche sa place en tournant autour de l’objet de désir que représente la Bourse. A la faveur de cette promenade qui enregistre des rencontres providentielles se met en place un personnel romanesque, ce qui donne à cet incipit profus et étendu la valeur d’une exposition dramatique qui annonce un roman du faux.
