Abstract
Abstract This article surveys the aesthetic differences between murals that are a visual response to community identity and temporary large-scale works shaped by the Western canon of underground urban graffiti. To theorize the production of urban art by reading its history and the intent of artists introduces new scholarly inquiry of the shared and conflicting messages of a popular form of public art.
