Abstract
Every so often the tabloids huff and puff about the effects on children of the violence portrayed in television programmes and films. You know the kind of thing: how can children possibly appreciate the consequences of violent action when fiction fails to mirror fact? Even Tom and Jerry cartoons are criticised for giving the impression that every creature on the receiving end of violence miraculously bounces back to shape and health. It’s a wonderful world, the ‘toon world. And it seems self-evident that anyone with half a brain will understand that violent action has devastating consequences for the victims.
