Abstract
Les lois canadiennes visent à réduire le nombre d’armes à feu (AAF) en circulation et à les rendre plus difficiles d’accès en augmentant les vérifications auprès des demandeurs et en édictant des mesures d’entreposage claires et sécuritaires. Les lois prévoient également des peines plus sévères lorsque des crimes sont commis avec des AAF. En théorie, il devrait en résulter une baisse des crimes et des traumatismes impliquant des armes à feu, tels que les suicides et les homicides. Pourtant, plusieurs sont d’avis contraire. Ils affirment que les armes à feu permettent, d’une part, de se défendre contre un assaillant et, d’autre part, de dissuader les délinquants de s’introduire par effraction dans un domicile où les résidents sont potentiellement armés. De plus, il est toujours possible d’arguer que plusieurs moyens tout aussi létaux s’offrent au délinquant motivé. Le problème ne serait que déplacé.
