Parler d’éducation à l’éthique c’est en général considérer cette dernière comme une entité c’est-à-dire comme quelque chose qui serait suffisamment défini pour constituer un élément du réel support à transmission. Pourtant, et les difficultés auxquelles sont confrontées les éducateurs le montrent assez bien, les questions éthiques sont délicates à définir : l’éthique implique de s’appliquer ou de faire appliquer des règles, mais ne dit rien sur la nature de ces règles. De ce point de vue, l’éthique est plus une potentialité vers laquelle il s’agit de tendre qu’une entité que l’on pourrait circonscrire pour en faire un objet d’apprentissage défini. Dans cet article, je me propose d’examiner les conséquences de cette proposition. J’en déduirai quelques pistes pour penser l’éthique à l’école en tentant de montrer pourquoi il est sans doute plus judicieux de viser une instauration plus qu’un fondement de celle-ci.
