Abstract
Notre terrain ethnographique mené en France et au Québec auprès de femmes entrées dans l’islam a mis en évidence la centralité du travail sur le soi (djihad an-naf s) dans le processus de conversion. Si cette herméneutique du soi correspond à une lecture théologique de l’être musulman et de sa formation, ces exercices de composition du sujet s’opèrent également à l’intersection de deux systèmes culturels et sociaux en tension, celui d’origine et celui choisi. Comment les femmes rencontrées s’approprient-elles ces deux univers de sens et de normes ? Quelles nouvelles possibilités sociales et politiques ces processus de subjectivation ainsi négociés ouvrent-ils ? Dans cet article, nous décrivons les activités caritatives, comportements d’entraide et engagement sociaux que les nouvelles musulmanes organisent comme une forme de praxi s inhérente à leur compréhension de l’islam. C’est dans l’action, la démonstration, voire l’ostentation des pratiques axées sur la réalisation de la piété personnelle dans l’immanence que les converties élaborent des cadres normatifs alternatifs, la volonté de perfectionner le soi étant ainsi mise au service de la communauté. L’islam apparaît ici comme un langage identitaire et politique, vecteur d’un projet de société alternatif.
