Abstract
Tremor is an involuntary, rhythmical movement present in multiple neurological disorders. It is most commonly seen in the upper extremities, but can also affect the head, voice, lower extremities, trunk, face, jaw and tongue. Dependent upon the disorder, tremor not only occurs in various body parts, but may also be present under different conditions, that is, when at rest, during sustained posture, or during movement (action and intention tremor) [1]. Current pharmacologic treatments often provide inadequate control of tremor. In the 1980s, deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the ventral intermediate nucleus of the thalamus was shown to significantly reduce tremor [2]. DBS of the thalamus was initially approved for the treatment of essential and parkinsonian tremor in Europe, Canada and other countries in 1995 and in the USA in 1997. DBS is currently the treatment of choice for medication-resistant tremor. This chapter focuses on DBS for essential tremor, parkinsonian tremor and cerebellar tremor secondary to multiple sclerosis.
