Abstract
Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a common problem in the oncologic population, and it is the second cause of death after cancer progression. For hospitalized, medically ill cancer patients, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, National Comprehensive Cancer Network, European Society for Medical Oncology, American College of Chest Physicians and international guidelines recommend thromboprophylaxis with low-molecular-weight heparin. The role for thromboprophylaxis in outpatients has not been established yet. For the initial and long-term treatment of VTE, low-molecular-weight heparin are the drugs of choice over vitamin K antagonists due to their profile and efficacy, with 50% relative risk reduction in recurrent symptomatic VTE compared with vitamin K antagonists. The role for the new oral anticoagulants for thromboprophylaxis and VTE treatment in cancer patients, at this point, remains investigational.
