Contexte : Depuis 2010, on observe une augmentation des infections à N. meningitidis de sérogroupe W (MenW) dans de nombreux pays en raison de l'émergence d'isolats appartenant au complexe clonal de séquence type (ST) 11.En 2016, une légère augmentation des infections à MenW dues au complexe clonal ST-11 a été signalée en Ontario, au Canada.Objectif : Examiner les tendances relatives à l'infection à MenW au Canada et évaluer s'il y a eu des modifications du type de complexe clonal ST causant les infections à MenW entre 2009 et 2016.Méthodologie : Des isolats invasifs de N. meningitidis régulièrement envoyés au Laboratoire national de microbiologie ont été analysés.La répartition proportionnelle de MenW par rapport à celle d'autres sérogroupes a été calculée.Les isolats de MenW ont ensuite été caractérisés davantage en fonction du sérotype, du sous-type sérologique et du complexe clonal ST.La répartition géographique du complexe clonal ST-11 émergent a été documentée et l'âge des patients infectés par MenW du complexe clonal ST-11 a été comparé à celui des patients infectés par MenW du complexe clonal traditionnel ST-22.Résultats : Sur les 888 isolats invasifs examinés, 63 étaient des isolats de MenW, ce qui équivaut à un taux annuel moyen de 7,1 %.Toutefois, le pourcentage d'isolats de MenW est passé de 2,7 % en 2012 à 18,8 % en 2016.De 2009 à 2013, 91 % des isolats de MenW ont été identifiés par typage comme appartenant au complexe clonal ST-22 traditionnel, alors que de 2014 à 2016, 75 % des isolats ont été identifiés comme appartenant au complexe clonal ST-11 émergent.La présence du complexe clonal ST-11 a été documentée dans cinq provinces du Canada (Colombie-Britannique, Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario et Québec).L'âge médian des patients infectés par MenW du complexe clonal ST-11 émergent était de 53,5 ans, alors qu'il était de 23,5 ans chez les patients infectés par MenW du complexe clonal ST-22 traditionnel.Conclusion : La prévalence de la méningococcie à MenW augmente au Canada et est associée à une augmentation des cas attribuables au complexe clonal ST-11 émergent, qui a maintenant été identifié dans cinq provinces canadiennes.Il semble plus courant chez les patients âgés que le complexe clonal ST-22 traditionnel, plus répandu chez les jeunes patients.
