Depuis l’Accord sur le nucléaire de 2015, la République islamique d’Iran, n’est plus soumise aux sanctions internationales. On assiste à une « renaissance » et non d’un « retour » de l’Iran impérial. Le pays est profondément transformé : un nouveau nationalisme catalyse l’unité du pays, la société est marquée par la socialisation des femmes, et l’islam politique a subi la sécularisation et l’expérience du pouvoir. Désormais, il y a deux « gendarmes » rivaux de part et d’autre du golfe Persique. La République islamique d’Iran et les monarchies pétrolières, dont l’Arabie saoudite, sont deux puissances régionales émergentes qui n’existaient pas il y a quarante ans et dont dépend la sécurité du Moyen Orient.
