Abstract
La cérémonie d’hommage au maître ou wai khru a déjà pu faire l’objet d’études approfondies (Wong & Lysloff 1991, Wong 2001), l’enjeu sera ici de comprendre ce qu’elle devient une fois que la transmission de la musique et du rituel n’est plus régie par la relation du maître à l’élève. Fondé il y a un peu moins d’une dizaine d’années à Lomsak dans la province de Phetchabun, à la frontière de la région nord thaïlandaise et de la région isan, le groupe de procession Khun Narin Sin Phin Prayuk voit son destin radicalement changé quand il publie en 2011 une première vidéo sur la plate-forme numérique YouTube. « Trouvée » et diffusée dans la blogosphère musicale indépendante américaine, la troupe est ensuite contactée par une maison de disques indépendante pour l’enregistrement d’un premier album. En 2015, sous le nom de Khun Narin Electric Phin Band, la troupe est invitée à se produire en Europe. Au-delà des changements et de la relation à un maître incarné, le wai khru se profile entre bouddhisme et culte surnaturel, souci du travail bien fait et ivresse de la fête. L’article se propose ainsi d’observer la contribution indispensable de la cérémonie à l’équilibre des forces contraires qui traversent les festivités thaïes.
