Plutôt qu'un travail d'exégèse philosophique, l'Essai critique sur Nietzsche de Victor Serge constitue un document historique, une pièce d'archive sur la réception du nietzschéanisme en France au tournant du XX e siècle et plus particulièrement, de sa réception politique dans les milieux anarchistes individualistes.Pour autant, la teneur philosophique de l'ouvrage n'en est pas moins importante, au contraire.Fils d'exilés russes et penseur libertaire autodidacte, Victor Serge (1890-1947) fréquente dès sa jeunesse les milieux anarchistes en France avant de rejoindre la Russie en 1919 pour se mettre au service de la révolution bolchevik.Dénonciateur de la première heure du stalinisme naissant, Serge se rapproche dans les années 1920 de Trotsky 1 .Son Essai sur Nietzsche paraît initialement en 1917 dans le journal anarchiste espagnol Tierra y Libertad dans une période de repositionnement théorique.Serge cherche en effet à concilier sa conception individualiste du monde avec l'idéal d'un mouvement révolutionnaire collectif en plein essor en Russie.Comme l'écrit en effet Annick Stevens qui signe la longue présentation de l'Essai : « Audelà de son rapport à Nietzsche, l'Essai apparaît comme une occasion de clarifier dans quelle mesure [l']individualisme [de Serge] est ______________ * L'auteur est doctorant en philosophie (Université d'Ottawa).
