Abstract
La población de Canadá creció gracias al aporte incesante de inmigrantes desde el siglo XIX. No obstante, la política de aceptación de inmigrantes prioriza ahora a las personas más capacitadas al nivel profesional y mide el éxito de su integración por su participación en el mercado laboral. Este enfoque de política ignora, sin embargo, la contribución de la familia en la trayectoria migratoria. Este artículo presenta resultados de un estudio cualitativo que examina el papel de la familia en el proceso de integración de 23 familias de inmigrantes en la región metropolitana de Toronto, Canadá. Frente a un mercado laboral discriminatorio, los resultados ponen en evidencia que estos inmigrantes encuentran la mayor fuente de resiliencia en sus propias redes familiares. El núcleo familiar –en muchos casos extendido a amigos en el nuevo ámbito— ofrece de hecho un apoyo emocional y económico estratégico para facilitar las transiciones social, educacional y profesional de sus miembros. Estos resultados permiten cuestionar el enfoque laboral e inmigratorio actual y proponer una visión que considere a la familia migrante como un factor ineludible de integración social y económica.
