En premier lieu, ce texte présente une série d’observations concernant l’histoire cartographique à Paris dont une dimension importante apparaît depuis toujours lacunaire : celle de la progression de la maîtrise topographique du relief durant la première moitié du XIXe siècle. L’enquête historique montre que ce « chapitre » est un complément indispensable pour saisir des évolutions de la cartographie urbaine et les débuts d’une pratique urbaniste à Paris, pour partie occultée par des écrits du Second Empire. En second lieu, notre texte rend compte de la production d’une donnée cartographique neuve donnant un accès à une contribution contemporaine sur la morphologie urbaine. Les études sur le métabolisme urbain posent par exemple la question de la connaissance du stock de matière anthropique contenu dans une ville. Nous démontrons que la connaissance et le traitement par les systèmes d’information géographique (SIG) du relief cartographique historique peut contribuer significativement à cette interrogation.
