Resilient Modulus and Permanent Strain Behavior of a Compacted Red Clay

Abstract
Experimental studies of the resilient modulus (MR) and permanent strain (εp) behavior for a compacted red clay from Hunan, China are summarized in this paper. The focus of this research study is twofold: (1) to understand the influence of the compaction water content and the external stress level on the MR and εp; and (2) to check the validity of a simple “integrated approach” to predict both the soil-water characteristic curve (SWCC) as well as the MR - moisture content relationship. It is found that the MR and εp of the red clay are sensitive both to the compaction moisture content and external stress level changes for the tested red clay and the “integrated approach” is capable of providing suitable predictions.
