Des recherches menées dans les années 1990 et 2000 ont souligné les identités multiples des jeunes issus de l’immigration fréquentant les écoles montréalaises et le rapport de distance établi avec l’identité « francophone québécoise ». Ce rapport de distance avec l’identité du groupe majoritaire existe dans d’autres sociétés. C’est à partir d’une analyse critique des rapports ethniques que nous appréhendons cette frontière entre les groupes minoritaires et le groupe majoritaire, en prenant en compte les rapports de pouvoir en jeu. Nous analysons 60 entretiens qualitatifs menés auprès de jeunes issus de l’immigration à Montréal. Une analyse typologique met en exergue trois types de rapports au groupe majoritaire et de multiples identifications s’y raccrochant. Il s’avère qu’une majorité des jeunes interrogés ont développé un rapport de tension vis-à-vis du groupe majoritaire et qu’une majorité d’entre eux s’identifient à leur pays d’origine et au Canada. En conclusion, nous discutons des implications sociales et politiques de ces résultats.
