Abstract
Jean Vanier est aujourd’hui connu dans le monde entier pour avoir cree l’Arche il y a exactement cinquante ans - une institution unique, ou vivent ensemble volontaires et personnes avec un handicap mental, et qui compte cent cinquante communautes sur les cinq continents. Mais sait-on que le grand fondateur est aussi un philosophe, un maitre spirituel qui touche croyants et non-croyants, et un veritable aventurier a la vie pleine de rebondissements ? Le livre d'Anne-Sophie Constant brosse d'une plume vive le portrait de ce personnage hors-norme. A l’âge de treize ans, apres en avoir arrache l’autorisation a son pere (le general Vanier, futur gouverneur general du Canada), Jean Vanier s’engage dans la Royal Navy, en pleine guerre. Puis a vingt-deux ans, alors qu’il est promis a une belle carriere militaire, il quitte tout pour des etudes de philosophie et de theologie, qui le meneront jusqu’au doctorat et au professorat. Sa vie bascule encore en 1964 lorsqu’il decide de creer dans un village de l’Oise un lieu de vie avec des personnes handicapees. Plus tard encore, cet homme d’action profondement habite par l’Evangile deviendra un infatigable messager de la paix et de l’œcumenisme. Anne-Sophie Constant, nourrie d’une longue frequentation des communautes de l’Arche et d’une connaissance intime de l’œuvre de Jean Vanier, met en lumiere les influences, decrypte les evenements, distingue les hasards qui ont pu determiner ce destin si singulier. Elle nous fait vivre l’histoire exceptionnelle d’un homme libre.
