Abstract
Fondé sur l’exploitation des congés et rapports de mer déposés dans les archives de l’amirauté de Honfleur et à partir d’un fichier informatique contenant 460 enregistrements, cet article s’intéresse aux divers aspects de la pêche morutière honfleuraise des années 1665-1685. À travers cette étude, on voit émerger une aventure dont l’issue est souvent incertaine, les marins des bateaux morutiers affrontant ces épreuves que sont la tempête, une avarie, la rencontre avec les corsaires, la prise du navire et parfois la captivité. Malgré ces difficultés, l’estimation des résultats par campagne montre cependant que la pêche des morues sur les bancs de Terre-Neuve et de la côte du Canada au cours de la seconde moitié du xvii e siècle constitua une activité très payante pour les armateurs honfleurais et fort rémunératrice pour les équipages, qui gagnaient en deux cents jours de travail de quoi vivre une année.
