Abstract
15 fevrier 1839. Cinq patriotes montent sur l'echafaud afin d'y etre pendus. La colonie britannique du Canada est en crise. La periode des rebellions de 1837-1838 est un moment charniere de l'histoire du Quebec. Gilles Laporte en propose ici une premiere synthese claire et accessible. Il prend le temps d'asseoir les fondations d'un territoire et d'un peuple, le Bas-Canada du debut du XIXe siecle, avant de presenter trente ans de luttes politiques. Les enjeux complexes, allant bien au-dela d'une simple lutte linguistique, prennent alors tout leur sens. Les principales batailles et les soulevements sont aussi clairement abordes. Seize portraits regionaux et cinquante capsules biographiques completent ce remarquable ouvrage. Historien specialiste du XIXe siecle quebecois, Gilles Laporte enseigne l'histoire du Quebec au cegep du Vieux Montreal et a l'Universite du Quebec a Montreal. Il est l'auteur de nombreux articles et ouvrages, dont Patriotes et Loyaux (Septentrion, 2004), Molson et le Quebec (Michel Brule, 2009) et Fondements historiques du Quebec (Cheneliere, Prix du ministre 2013).
